Remodeling in St. Louis
Brick, plaster and century-old bones worth working with.
The city's housing stock is one of the most distinctive in the country: solid masonry, real framing, plaster walls and ceiling heights nobody builds to any more. Those houses reward renovation and punish shortcuts, because everything in them was built by hand and very little of it is standard dimension.
The housing stock in St. Louis
Brick bungalows, two-family flats and turn-of-the-century homes across South City, Tower Grove, Dutchtown and the north side. More than half the housing in the city was built before 1940 — the median build year is 1938 — so expect knob-and-tube or early wiring in untouched houses, galvanised supply lines, and plaster over lath that needs a different approach than drywall.
