Composite costs more up front and you stop sanding and staining it every couple of years. Wood costs less and looks better on certain houses. Both are fine when the frame underneath is right, and the frame is wood either way.
Does a deck need a permit?
In most municipalities around St. Louis, yes, past a certain size or height. It gets handled as part of the job.
Can you fix an existing deck instead of replacing it?
Sometimes. It depends on the footings and the frame. If the structure is sound, new decking and railings can make it a different deck for far less. If it is not, replacing boards on a bad frame is money wasted.
